Oven or hob?
Is the issue with the oven or the hob?


Hear the gas supply?
Can you hear the gas supply when trying to ignite the burners?


Gas Supply
Check that the gas supply is turned on.



Can you now hear the gas supply when trying to ignite the burners?
Gas line
Check that there are no kinks or obstructions in the gas line.

Can you now hear the gas supply when trying to ignite the burners?
Do the hob burners now ignite?
Do the hob burners now ignite and produce a steady flame?


Ignition click
When pushing the ignition button in, is there a clicking noise heard?


Is the cooker turned on at the mains?
Check that the cooker is turned on at the mains.



Can a clicking noise now be heard when pushing the ignition button in?
Cooker circuit is on at the fuse board
Check that the cooker circuit is switched on at the fuse board. If either, or both, the cooker switch or the RCD (if the fuse board has one) is in the OFF position, check for any faults with the cooker and try switching the switches back into the ON position.



Did this resolve the issue, or did the switch trip back into the OFF position?

Can a clicking noise now be heard when pushing the ignition button in?

Remove and clean the burner parts
Remove and clean the burner parts, removing any food or debris which could prevent the burner lighting.

Check that all the burner parts are properly aligned, as incorrectly fitted parts can cause the burner to burn inefficiently.

Flame safety device
All gas hobs since 2010 are fitted with a Flame safe device (FSD), if the hob burner has been accidentally extinguished the gas supply will automatically cut out.

You will need to wait 90 seconds before trying to re-ignite the hob burner.

Clean the burner, removing any food or debris which could prevent the burner lighting.

Turn the oven off at the mains for a few minutes, then turn back on.

Some models of cookers have a child lock option. Check that the child lock is not enabled.

Check that the cooker circuit is switched on at the fuse board. If either, or both, the cooker switch or the RCD (if the fuse board has one) is in the OFF position, check for any faults with the cooker and try switching the switches back into the ON position.

Internal light working?
Does the interior oven light now work?


Replace the light bulb
The interior light bulb may be broken and maybe in need of replacing.

Igniting the burner
When igniting the burner continue to hold the desired burner control knob in for a few seconds, until the flame is alight and stable before releasing.

Food or debris obstruction
Check that there is no food or debris preventing the hob burner lighting.

Using a toothpick or similar utensil to clean out the burner holes.



Re-ignite the burner.

Check that all the burner parts are properly aligned, as incorrectly fitted parts can cause the burner to burn inefficiently.

Re-ignite the burner.

Gas line
Turn the corresponding gas burner control knob to 0. Open doors and windows so the room can be ventilated.



Check that there are no kinks or obstructions in the gas line.

Wait 90 seconds, then re-ignite the burner.

Strong draught
Strong draughts can affect the flame of the gas burner.

Check there are no strong draughts near the hob.

Liquid under the burner cap
Is there liquid under the burner cap?

Remove the burner cap, clean, then reassemble.

Check that all the burner parts are properly aligned, as incorrectly fitted parts can cause the burner to burn inefficiently.

Check that there is no food or debris preventing the hob burner from lighting.

Advice about condensation
It is normal for condensation and steam to build up in the oven during and after cooking especially with food which has a high water content (e.g., chicken or frozen chips).

Pre-heating the oven before placing food into the oven can help reduce the amount of condensation being produced.

Avoid leaving food in the oven to cool down after being cooked.

This will minimise steam and condensation being produced.

A damaged seal can cause condensation to build up on the door window seal.

Replace the dial / control knob
Replace the dial / control knob by pushing it back into place, ensuring it is lined up correctly.
