Build up of grass clippings and debris

Mowing grass when it's wet can cause grass clippings and debris to build up underneath the mower around the cutting area. This can make your lawn mower hard to push.


Is there a build up of grass clippings and debris underneath the mower?

Remove the build up of grass cuttings and debris

Remove the power source, then remove the build up of grass cuttings and debris, then cut the grass when its dry.

Loose or missing wheel

If a wheel is loose of has come off, your lawn mower could be hard to push.


Is a wheel loose, or has a wheel come off?

Tighten or replace the wheel

Remove the power source, then tighten or replace the wheel.

Blocked air filter

The air filter over time will get blocked or contaminated with dust and grass, which can reduce the airflow to the engine, and can make the lawn mower harder to push.


Remove and inspect the air filter.

Depending on the make and model of your lawn mower, clean or replace the air filter.

Check the spark plug

A build-up of dirt on the spark plug can cause the lawn mower to idle poorly, which can make the lawn mower hard to push and even stop.


Remove, then inspect the spark plug.

Is there a build up of dirt on the spark plug?

Clean the spark plug

Clean and check the gap spacing, then replace the spark plug.


The gap spacing is the distance between the ground and centre electrode. This needs to be set correctly using a feeler gauge. If the gap is too large, this produce a large spark and can cause poor engine performance. If the gap is too small, this will produce a small spark causing the engine to misfire.

Fuel cap vent hole

Most fuel caps have a small vent hole to allow air into the tank. This is to provide atmospheric pressure in the tank. If the vent is blocked, this would create a vacuum as fuel is used and prevent flow of fuel to the engine.


Remove, then using a torch inspect the fuel cap for any blockage.

Using a toothpick or something similar remove the blockage, then with a clean dry cloth wipe the vent hole removing any built up dirt or debris.


When the vent hole is clear, replace the fuel cap.

If the collection box/bag is full, fitted incorrectly or obstructed, grass will not collect properly.

If grass is not being collected. The cutting blade maybe blunt or damaged, and will not cut the grass.

Brake lever

If the brake lever is not fully held in, the starting cord will be hard to pull and the motor will not start.
